Thank you for your videos! You talk from my soul, i have the exact same thoughts. A few years ago i got into Self Improvement and were constantly watching videos for self improvement. And that went into materialistic stuff. I bought so many items, that i thought will improve my life. I wanted to be like People with Success. But instead i got depressed and fell into a hole, from which i can slowly get out. I now say it myself, Self Improvement was one of the worst things i have ever done in my life. I overthaught everything. Real changes come from experiences, from social interactions, something that didn’t and doesn‘t exist yet in Germany cause of Covid. Since one year im in Home Office. I cant meet with friends and others. But i see the end of covid as a chance. A chance for me to get out of this black hole and start to enjoy my life. If you ever read this: Thanks for making these videos. I will continue to follow your journey, no matter which way you will go.

To me constantly thinking about being productive, achieving more and exactly, ticking those boxes from to-do list can easily end up in a very self-centered way of living. What AM I gonna do next, which content I NEED to put out next, what goal I TRY to achieve next. But to me, feeling full and happy always comes down to other people, helping, giving and sharing. We all are here for ourselves and I love to-do lists, productivity tricks and life optimization. But all that is going to have to be balanced with experiences, relationships, communities and being in the moment. To me, that's the perfect way to think about life.

I think I'm going to have to respectfully disagree I don't think that productivity and happiness are intertwined at all. I think that if you focus on just productivity you are going to be unhappy but a lot of productivity tips and advice that I have learned has been helpful to further my goals and the things I enjoy as hobbies that I wouldn't really do otherwise. For example, I am writing a book and I wouldn't have started or gotten as far as I have without productivity to keep me doing it. For me, it acts as a motivator and a shortcut not a way of life and that is the distinction I make. I won't ever map out an extensive calendar and keep myself strict on doing things at the right time if some human experience comes up then I will keep to that because I know that it is more important. Productivity is a means to an end not the end and I never want my wanting to be productive to eclipse the reason I am a human.

Yup. Giving advice thinking they’re wise. Over-intellectualised basic concepts and got lost in untested theories; typically crashing into walls for it. So many narcissists creating “content” as-if their basic observations are deep. And it sells, to anyone lost. I’m sure this channel will now pivot toward spiritual advice.

I can't work out if "being driven" is just a human trait of our 20s to force us out of our teenage apathy, or whether it's a artificial culturally created pressure from schools and media to fulfil our potential which we can only see through when we reach a certain age / level of maturity, but for me from mid-30s on I've been able to let go of it and focus on simply living without having to prove myself or achieve something.

everyone needs to sit down and figure out what parts of your mindset are useful for you to live your life, and what parts were programmed by society and unnecessary to your enjoyment of life. western society is so driven by media and selling ideas and products, and there's an incentive to keep people in that system which makes us all afraid of living differently or being seen as weird. i promise you, if you want to be truly happy in our society, you need to be a little bit weird in the eyes of our society.

First of all, I just watched this at work with subtitles but I feel like this family was Albanian, I could tell by the way they are treating you, what they are wearing, the goats and the nature. I’ll have to confirm this later haha.. But most importantly, I feel you!!! I know what you mean… You know, a few years ago I had so many dreams and I felt like I’m gonna do something really big someday. When I went to study in Spain for the second time, I was all alone and the love for my boyfriend made me understand this: There’s no other success that I’d like to achieve rather than love. I came to understand that LOVE is the the only success I should fight for, love for myself and for the people that surround me. I understood that I didn’t want to have the fame and be running all day doing things that will not let me have time to spend with people. I don’t remember really well what helped me to come to this conclusion but here I am… wanting to do things that I know won’t take my whole time from my family. As an empath I create really strong connections with people and It’s always been one of my main points in life. Now I know that even if I achieve everything I dreamt for I won’t take anything with me when I die besides memories and a full heart. I’ve realized that this means living to the fullest, to have truly lived a good and beautiful life. Since I haven’t had a very good childhood, now my main goal is to have a happy family and maybe just write a book… after I know I have truly lived, no matter the years. There are so many unhappy people out there for different reasons... but I don't want to be one of them. I hope this video helps everyone reflect on the life they're living! Much love!

I'm just recently at 43 diagnosed autistic how about you!? I'm not that great at "learning about myself" but I also feel like it's something that's demanded, and yet I'm very aware that maybe that feeling is wrong! Same for diagnosis and a picture of how self help fits in with that and world inequalities but at the same time I still feel like myself is the barrier or everybody else is, and that's a difficulty. There must be a way to skip around it. But hope turns to conviction which turns to a mix of desperation and pathetic dogmatic narcissism in other people's eyes. So much transference and countertransference and woo. But at the same time... Maybe we're all a kind of computer like in Hitchhiker's Guide but also maybe pyramid selling our own contradictions and pains - selling our own suffering and background and uniqueness because we're trying to make value of it. And that's what a lot of the ads in this was about. Disability awareness is a whole other thing. Going through life with an open heart was my life goal at different times. But it's more complicated than that. Success is a bogus paradigm, still a goal and a kind of productivity and a sieve or razor applied to your life and other people. And that's not a way to fight against oppression and evil. And just so much of the framing of the philosophy in these platforms and beyond is about twisting things towards profit for someone. Or incapacitation. Or exploitation of generosity through guilt, anxiety and escalated agitated energy. It is not necessarily anyone's particular evil - though there are knowing carpet baggers and violent hatemongers out there, I think we can all fall into that or be interpreted as that. To some degree or another. Value is a complex thing. It's not any one singular axis, heirarchy or currency, though there are currents in it. Ambient experience in being is a huge thing. But just like any field we navigate by creating binaries on binaries: arbitary compass points and/or cardinal directions and turns, movement and pause. Like we're all those educational robots, beebots. When life and whatever field we're in is a multidimensional analogue tapestry and landscape. Simple is best for emergency adrenal system type decisions and stress responses, but there's also an element of planning in terms of resource use and avoidance of threats. Social communication, physically sensing and mentalising our world are just really deep and messily intermingled in our evolutionary history and the nature of life. The contradictions are part of it. It's not just about sex or genes either: what we pass on is value and caution or wealth in intangible or epigenetic or cultural admixtures and pendulum-swings and other dynamics too. Anxiety and sadness have value for what they teach us and costs, we don't have to be grateful for them. Opportunity has a lot of anxiety and sadness in it, an inherent demand. As does everything that threatens us or seems to. They're more or less the same. Except they're not, qualatively. And therein lies the rub when feelings become the commodity. That's a pretty dystopian world. Very manipulable. Very carpet bagging hyper-relativity. But what it means is either something spiritual we only prove with hindsight or some meta network or entanglement ish physics we're extinct before we know or that change by being observed because we change. Anyway sweating any of this stuff is a diversion. Except. Nothing is wasted - eg if energy cannot be created or destroyed. But the vector and the choice and torque we put in it is what it is.

You cannot trully self improve without the help of Almighty God Yehovah of Armies, Our Heavenly Father and Father of our own Lord Christ Jesus. Because if you try to self improve you may change, but you'll only be lying to yourself, because sooner or later, a day or a decade after that, you'll wonder "does this even matter?". By that point, you can expect your life to degrade, either gradually or significantly. When you improve without a legitimate goal, why even improve in the first place? Without that legitimate goal, you'll be doing that just for vanity, wich is chasing after the wind. It's even in the name, it's vane. If you're up for some true philosophies, i'd recommend a book in the Bible that doesn't get as much attention as other Biblical books get. Read Ecclesiastes. King Solomon was made the smartest man for his time by Jehovah Almighty God. Compared to today's most briliant minds, he wold definetly be up there. And also keep in mind that Jesus Christ still was in Heaven right by his Father's right side, so, here on Earth, Solomon was the smartest man alive for that time. And what he researched... it even inspires me. What he wrotte in Ecclesiastes should not be underestimated, that's some pretty powerful stuff, and it could definetly help you on your journey of "Self-Improvement". I'd wish you good luck, but Luck is a superstition -- Not a real thing... Ecclesiastes 3, there's a time for everything, all about chances, wich disproves the concept of Luck.

I find that the missing piece in this discussion is looking at the structural reasons why so many people are facing the same issues - like our obsession with productivity being fueled by economic insecurity and a capitalist worldview that encourages us to only see our value in terms of our economic contribution. Some of the issues that are weighing on our mental health can't be fixed by just going inward, but by addressing the social and economic structures causing the issue in the first place.

It's not self help or productivity books ruining lives, instead it's the mindset we pick these books up from. Most people are trying to fill a void in themselves, and if I've learnt anything through these books, is that they can't do that. It's the lack of clarity with which we pick these books up with that leads us to read them one after another. Instead if we pick these books up to learn, and discern the how with why, it would be easier to read with a sense of purpose and knowing what we want to take out of them. Pick what you need and works for you and drop the rest. They teach us how to be more productive and optimise our lives, but we often forget to ask why we're doing it and then it becomes so easy to confuse them with school textbooks where everything is important and must be learnt and followed.

If we put God first in our life He will take care of everything else. THE GOSPEL (THE GOOD NEWS) OF JESUS CHRIST OUR SAVIOR One of the main reasons we are here is to be sorry (repent) for our sins and seek a loving reconciled relationship with God our Creator in heaven Who wrote the Holy Bible to us, by accepting His only begotten Son Jesus Christ as our Savior from our sins, because right now we are all separated from God in heaven because of our sins, but.. Jesus Christ came down here from heaven (God on earth), and He was born one of us, and He dwelt among us, and He gave us His perfect sinless life, and He died on the cross, to pay for, and to save us from our sins, to reconcile us with God and to give us eternal life with Him, and He resurrected from the dead three days later, and after living on earth for forty more days, He ascended back up into heaven and He is coming back again at the end of this world, and everyone will see Him and be judged by Him. Always love and be thankful for Jesus Christ! We cannot earn salvation and eternal life and be reconciled with God with good deeds or with religious rituals, It is the gift from God to all who believe, that Jesus Christ died on the cross and resurrected from the dead, to save them from their sins, to reconcile them with God, and to give them eternal life with Him. period. Simple. Truth. Come as you are, sins and all, and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and He will change you from the inside out. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Become a "CHRIST"ian, a Christian, accept Jesus Christ as your Savior now, today. We all must accept Jesus Christ as our Savior to be born again of the Holy Spirit. There is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved . Pray (talk to God) and read the Holy Bible everyday.

@Clayton Lee The entire universe is proof there is a God, there is a Creator, what more proof do you need? If the universe is not proof enough for you, what will you believe? Do you really think that we, intricate and complex intelligent human beings just "poofed" into existence, came out of nowhere, with our complex brains, and feelings of love and anger and sadness and humor, our ability to reason and intricate nervous system, eyes that see, ears that hear, organs that function together are here because of a big "bang," an explosion? explosions cause chaos and destruction, not order and creation. Do you not believe that we are created in the image of God our Creator and that is why we are as miraculous as we are? Do you believe that the intricate plant world just is because it is, and the intricate complex insect world, and the intricate complex animal world, and the single cell organism world and the vast intricate universe of stars and planets, gravity and gasses, especially the earth that was the only planet made to sustain life , all just are self existent??? Do you believe this but you don't believe in God? GOD is self existent and Almighty and He is the Creator of all of these. Blind faith? Faith is based on our personal relationship with God, our knowledge of His nature and His character and His promises, not " blind faith" like you insinuate to be without understanding and perception. Faith is trust or confidence in someone or something, and I have full trust and confidence in God. The first time Jesus (God on earth) appeared to the disciples after His crucifixion, one of them, Thomas was not there, and when the others told him that they had seen Jesus and talked with Him, and that He was alive, he did not believe them, having witnessed His horrible death. When Jesus appeared to them again, Thomas was there, and Jesus knowing he did not believe, told him to put his hands into His wounds, and to not be unbelieving, but be believing. and Thomas said "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." This is faith. Jesus told them before He was crucified what was about to happen and that He would die and resurrect, but they didn't get it, they didn't believe. Do you believe that your brakes on your car will stop you the next time you come up behind another car, if you do that is faith, trust and confidence in something you cant see. Do you believe in gravity even though you can't see it, yet not believe in God who created it? Do you believe that George Washington existed even though you never saw him, but yet not believe in God that you have not seen? If your mind is set on not believing, you will not believe. Like Jesus said, "Do not be unbelieving, but believing"

@slamee100 you’ve still offered zero proof or credibility to what you’re saying. You say love has nothing to do with science but that’s not true. The brain releases oxytocin which is secreted by the pituitary gland. That’s how love works. It’s all chemicals in your brain. You’re the one who has bold claims about God and this universe so you have to bring evidence to the table. Burden of proof is on you buddy not me.

@Clayton Lee It is a lie from Satan that the Bible contains errors and is not credible, so as to keep people from reading it and obtaining salvation through Jesus Christ. Satan wants us to fail like he did. It should be as easy to believe that it is credible, as it is to believe that it isn't. But people believe the lies that Satan passes around. The existence of God is proclaimed through all of His creation, not just the science part, although He did create the science of everything that exists also. We understand and know God in our heart, not through scientific proof. He's our Creator, no one is closer to us than He. You can hear scientific proof all day long and still not know God. Love has little or nothing to do with science. Seek the Lord with loving curiosity in your heart, not with doubt and a mind already set on disbelief. Have a good one Clayton. : )

Like many things in life, it's a unique art of balance for sure. Many of your videos over the past couple years have played a HUGE role in pushing me to want a more meaningful life for myself. To want to get better, to find more enjoyment in my work, and to become a better version of me. But I've found myself that things can go too far if we're not careful - where we hold ourselves overly accountable to be some sort of superhuman productivity machine. Often there is much happiness to be found within, and in the way things are now :)

The Five Attachments is a great book to read on this subject. Its about the idea of accepting your "Authentic Self", and improving out of self-love, and wishing better for yourself, and not out of your attachments to the titles or ideas that you associate yourself with so deeply. In this case, the attachment to productivity.

Self-help content makes us build this mindset of chasing and building a life we want, but it’s always about the future. “I want to live this way, I would like to be more like this”, but we never seem to get to a destination. I haven’t.. for years I’ve been trying and trying to better my life. And even for somebody who’s life has gotten better ever since they started that journey, I think you’re right. They’re always looking to get.. even better in the future. Even if the progress they made is enough. So then we may end up living our entire lives, just trying to make tomorrow a better day. Then tomorrow comes and we don’t focus on what we created. We just look at the next tomorrow and wish for even more.

so the people who ruined this generation with the one up culture and incongruent lifestyle through social media are now depressed af. Who woulda guessed? I cant be bothered to please or appease anyone. I do what I want and I mostly want what I like. I have a informal list of people that are important to me and I use them as a gauge of contentment. This video in itself is a part of the self improvement industry. Live life through the "as if" principle and you will never be bothered by anything. And also dont chase crypto and instagram models.

@tayo lenson Its funny isn’t it how we say we have to self-improve to have a purpose and yet surely the purpose of self-improvement is to achieve something! If you know what I mean! 🙄 I think i know what he means though. You can be so keen to self-improve that you don’t ‘go with the flow’ at all, and life can be just the same routine all the time. Perhaps to look, listen and learn as well as progressing means that you can think outside the box. Heck im talking such a lot of rubbish!! 🤣. Thanks so much for your kind reply. Will think on it!

@Kirsty Mackenzie dont listen to these fools, usually things dont go their way and they make excuses. My reason to self improve was to have a purpose, I would usually do nothing whole day and I felt worthless and my life was going nowhere, now that I started to really work on myself I feel way better about and feel way more confident. None of us are perfect but please dont remain average, always strive to be better because whats the point of your existence if you not progressing.

Well, i will disagree with you Brother. The thing is that , many of us actually do need life education to live our best life ( or say just to live life ) because many of us don't get it from parents and society. Of course we can learn it by our own life experiences but it comes at some price ; we lose people , we stay unhappy, we waste our life. But at the same time , it is also important that we don't get overwhelmed by Self-Help Theories and focus more on practical life.

Great video. I agree on the concept of the industry trying to exploit the human imperfection. I do think self-improvement is generally good, as long as it's done to achieve something you want and no to fill gaps or "feel better" because, as you mentioned, you don't feel enough. Plus, I think that there are several differences in some wording that is sometimes mixed and matched (often the wrong way). Self-improvement, Self-Coaching and Self-Help Self-help basically seems to assume you have something to fix. The most risky thing I can see is that often those tools may lead people who need (or at least thye could use it) help from outside, stay inside and can't exit their condition. Self-Coaching means finding feedback loops, tools and practices that help you in raising self-awareness of your body, mind, skill or whatever. They can compliment a real coach and they do not substitute a real coach. The risk is becoming frustrated when you cannot get out of "yourself" or your assumptions. At a certain point, you may just stop developing what you want. Self-Improvement means tools, techniques, practices or whatever you use to improve something you are already doing, very similar to coaching, but it could be related to anything else, studying, researching, coaching, and so on. The highest risk I can see is exactly that: you may look for perfection and create the expectation of perfection and lose sight of who you are and not working on the fact that may lead you to think "you are not enough". What do you think?

I liked how you pointed out the false equivocation of happiness and productivity. Any goal seems to approach the "limit" of happiness with magnitude, that's part of what drives us. But realizing that this momentum is merely a means for some greater end, and that we ought to define our end... thank you for sharing that perspective from your years of productivity addiction (kidding)

You’re a beautiful human! Thank you for sharing your reflections 🙏 The difference between “doing” and “being” is where most struggle. If a person can no longer “do” their sense of worth can collapse which is hearth breaking. Learning we don’t have to “do” we can just “be” human isn’t so much understood in society currently and this is where the self help industry swoops in profiting where they can. And if the small ego-self is still running the show it can be so confusing, become cyclical and prolong a mercilessly negative critical view of oneself. Great video and thank you for having the courage to share this so those struggling with these ideas know they’re not alone. Just found your channel through Traveling w/Kristin 🤓 and now subscribed 👍🙏
